When a tooth is damaged because of decay, it will need to be restored back to its normal function and shape with a filling. Dr. Fried removes the decayed areas of your tooth, cleans the affected area, and “fills” the area with either a composite (tooth-colored) or amalgam (silver) filling. This helps treat a cavity on a tooth.
Fillings can also be used to repair cracked or broken teeth and teeth that are worn down. There are a variety of materials that can be used for fillings. No one type of filling is best for everyone. The materials used will depend on the extent of the repair, allergies to materials, location of the tooth, and cost.
Composite restorations come in various shades to match the color of your tooth. They allow for a natural appearance after you have had a filling. We use advanced bonding technology to strengthen your tooth and limit sensitivity through the use of conditioning agents and liners.
Amalgam fillings are silver fillings that are resistant to wear. They may be necessary due to the size of the fillings and location of the tooth. Although they are less expensive, the dark color of the amalgam makes it very visible and less aesthetically pleasing.
Bonding is used for cosmetic purposes to improve the appearance, shape, or color of a tooth. It can also be used to rebuild a tooth that has been chipped. A tooth-colored filling material is “bonded” to the tooth using adhesives and a high-intensity curing light. Bonding not only makes a tooth look more esthetic, it also strengthens the remaining tooth structure.
